Character Strong (and Purposeful People) Traits
- Each month, CHE highlights a specific character trait: Respect, Responsibility, Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance, Honesty, Cooperation, Courage, Creativity
- Draw a picture (or do a project) about each of the character traits and show and tell it.
Zones of Regulation- Children learn the importance of emotional
Daily check-ins: ask your child, “How are you feeling?” What is your zone?” and your
child can point to or identify the zone. All feelings are okay. We are happiest, get along with others, and do our best work in the green zone. If a child feels stuck in another zone, ask, “Do you want to move it out, breathe it out, or talk it out?” (purposeful people). You can have a small container of items your child can choose from to practice calm down strategies, make a feelings journal, do movement activities, take a break, or have time to talk.
Kelso’s Choices Wheel- Children learn to solve small problems
Kids can try to solve their own small problems (anything that does not cause a child to feel
scared, hurt, or unsafe). Print or make a wheel using a paper plate and a movable arrow. Ask your child which choice they will choose to try to solve a small problem they are having, and
encourage 1-3 choice attempts before intervening if necessary. Talk about and celebrate problem-solving.
Be kind, respectful, and responsible. We focus on these daily traits
State appreciations when you see these traits and ask your child to do the same (make
it a game, “I Spy” someone being kind, role play, or do charades, sing songs, read books.
Here are a few books (also read online) that focus on these traits: A Little Spot of Kindness;
