Message from the principal

Dear Families:

We are busy celebrating the accomplishments of our students during the last month of school. If you think back to the student you sent on the first day of school in September, and compare that to the child you have today, I’m sure you notice so much growth. They are not just taller and into a new shoe size, but their conversations have advanced, they are more independent, and more caring for others.

End of year assessments and report cards will show how much they have learned. A variety of awards recognize character traits like effort and citizenship. We will have assemblies, a 4th grade concert, Field Day, the PTA Spring Carnival, and more to mark the end of the year. Thank you for taking time to celebrate your student’s progress!

I know that 4th graders are nervous about moving schools. There is a sense that students go from a very caring elementary environment to the intermediate school where they are on their own to figure it out. Nothing could be further from the truth. The OHI staff is incredibly caring, and they have the right level of support for students as they develop into 5th and 6th graders. CHE alumni have been very successful at OHI, and they tell amazing stories of the opportunities there.

For our students returning next year, we are excited to keep making progress and building on our message of being Respectful, Responsible, and Kind. This will also be the last year in our current school, since we will be packing up and moving into a brand new school at the end of next year.

I also know that some students and families will be leaving Whidbey Island. I hope that the next school you arrive at welcomes you and helps you continue to grow. Make us proud and show your new teacher what an awesome student you are!

Enjoy summer!

Sincerely,

Bill Weinsheimer

Summary of What our Students Know and Summer Fun Review

Character Strong (and Purposeful People) Traits
  • Each month, CHE highlights a specific character trait: Respect, Responsibility, Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance, Honesty, Cooperation, Courage, Creativity
  • Draw a picture (or do a project) about each of the character traits and show and tell it.

Zones of Regulation- Children learn the importance of emotional

Daily check-ins: ask your child, “How are you feeling?” What is your zone?” and your
child can point to or identify the zone. All feelings are okay. We are happiest, get along with others, and do our best work in the green zone. If a child feels stuck in another zone, ask, “Do you want to move it out, breathe it out, or talk it out?” (purposeful people). You can have a small container of items your child can choose from to practice calm down strategies, make a feelings journal, do movement activities, take a break, or have time to talk.

Kelso’s Choices Wheel- Children learn to solve small problems

Kids can try to solve their own small problems (anything that does not cause a child to feel
scared, hurt, or unsafe). Print or make a wheel using a paper plate and a movable arrow. Ask your child which choice they will choose to try to solve a small problem they are having, and
encourage 1-3 choice attempts before intervening if necessary. Talk about and celebrate problem-solving.

Be kind, respectful, and responsible. We focus on these daily traits

State appreciations when you see these traits and ask your child to do the same (make
it a game, “I Spy” someone being kind, role play, or do charades, sing songs, read books.

Here are a few books (also read online) that focus on these traits: A Little Spot of Kindness;

NURSE
Dear CHE Families:

We have had a great year working with your child. As we wrap up our school year, we want to pass along important information about your child’s healthcare and school medications.

END OF SCHOOL YEAR AND MEDICATIONS:
Please remember to pick up all medications your student had at school by 4:00 PM on June 18, 2025. We are not able to send medications home with your student or store medications over the summer. All medications left after 4:00 PM on the 18th will be destroyed. If your student has a life-threatening condition, medications must remain at school until the end of the school day on Wednesday, June 18th.

SCHOOL YEAR 2025-26:
ALL medication administration authorizations and health plans are good for one school year only and must be renewed annually. If your child requires a health plan or needs to take medication during the school day for the school year 2025-2026 (this includes any prescription, over-the-counter medications, or inhalers used at school, during team sports practices, or after school activities), please download the appropriate form from the district website https://www.ohsd.net/5568_3. Forms may also be picked up in your school’s office. Have your healthcare provider complete the form before school starts in the fall. Parents/Guardians must sign all forms. Please bring the completed medication authorization, health plan, and the medication in the original over-the-counter or labeled prescription container when school begins in the fall. Medications cannot be accepted from students.

DIABETES, LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES, SEVERE ASTHMA, AND SEIZURES:
Health plans and emergency medication for Diabetes, Life-Threatening Allergies, Severe Asthma & Seizures must be at school before the first day of the new school year, September 3, 2025. School office staff can begin accepting these items in August. School nursing staff will be available starting August 18, 2025. Students with life-threatening conditions will be excluded from school until the signed health plan and medication are at school. If your student has diabetes, your school nurse will contact you to set up a meeting prior to the first day of school to establish the required diabetes health plan. Current healthcare providers’ orders from the most recent diabetes checkup will be required.

Thank you for your cooperation, and please have a happy, healthy summer.

PTA News

Crescent Harbor Families:

The CHE PTA is looking for officers to lead the organization for the coming year. Our current board has sponsored several evening family events, supported fun activities for students within the school day, and shown appreciation for our staff throughout the year. They have done a fantastic job, and it is time for new leadership to step in. Erin and Colin Hedrick are aging out, as their child moves on to OHI!

The CHE PTA has a secretary and a treasurer for next year, and so the board is looking for a president and a vice president. The job can be as involved as you want to make it, and involving other members to take on the work of individual events (delegation!) really lightens the load. If you have been involved in PTAs in the past, or if you love organizing amazing activities that benefit the students and families of our school, then the PTA board is for you!

To express interest or ask questions, reach out to our current board at ptacrescentharbor@gmail.com.

The last event of the year is our Cub Carnival. We are still in need of volunteers. Sign up using the link below to help finish out the school year with some summer fun.
