Message from the Principal
bill
Dear Crescent Harbor Families:

There are many exciting things happening around school these days. Most visible is the start of construction of our new school! Enormous vehicles and an endless string of dump trucks are working to remove soft topsoil and establish a stable, graded surface to build our new school on. At the same time, students are busy in their classrooms learning to read to think mathematically, and develop as humans who can interact successfully with one another.

This newsletter is filled with events happening this month. I want to highlight a few:

  • Impact Aid Surveys are coming out soon. The online survey is how we demonstrate to the federal government what portion of our students are military dependents so that we can get funding reimbursement for the non taxable property within NASWI.
  • Our PTA is beginning its candy bar sales fundraiser this month. Our PTA supports classroom enrichment, student and family activities, and more. Please consider participating in the fundraiser.
  • Families are invited to Literacy Night toward the end of the month. This is a chance to see how well your child is reading and to learn how to support reading development at home.

While the days begin to get shorter and the nights get colder, there are still plenty of beautiful days to enjoy our amazing island. I encourage you to get students outside and away from their screens during the day while the weather still permits. We continue to get students outside during recess and before school, so please send your student to school with good outdoor shoes and a jacket. If you need help providing clothes for the season, let our office know, as we have resources to help keep every student prepared for the outdoor weather.

Sincerely,

Bill Weinsheimer
Principal

Electronic Devices and Smart Watches
OHPS Board Policies 2022, 2022P, 3245,  and the CHE Student and Family Handbook sets guidance for use of personal electronic devices by students at school. To help students focus on classroom activities and to keep students safe, electronic devices, including cell phones and smart watches are not allowed to be used during the school day.  Students are encouraged to leave personal electronic devices at home to avoid damage or theft, as the school is not responsible for lost or stolen electronics. Thank you for helping our teachers maintain a safe and engaged classroom by talking with your student about keeping personal cell phones, smart watches, and other electronics away during school.
Impact Aid
Today our school sent out a Federal Impact Aid Program Survey Form in ParentSquare. It is important that you fill out this form as soon as you receive it, no later than Friday, October 4.

Impact Aid is the Federal Government’s reimbursement to school districts for the presence of nontaxable Federal property such as our Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. This Impact Aid survey provides important information to the Federal Government that will determine how much Impact Aid funding the Oak Harbor Public Schools is eligible to receive. We rely on the Impact Aid funds to financially support programming for our students such as special education, transportation, and instructional support that directly serves the children in our schools.

This information is kept strictly confidential and is only used to determine the funding our district should receive. More information is available on our website. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you for your participation in ensuring that Oak Harbor Public Schools secures the resources it needs to serve our students better. We couldn’t do this work without your support.

Topic: Zones of Regulation
This year we will continue to teach students how to
identify their feelings and use tools. All feelings are
okay. We all move from one zone to another. We
want to make sure to keep ourselves and others safe
and not get stuck. We learn, work, feel best and get
along with others when we are in the green zone.
We encourage students to talk about their feelings,
identify the zone they are in and choose and use
tools to help them move into green zone. Some tools
include breath it out, move it out or talk it out.

It’s not surprising that every fall we begin to see an increase in the number of sick students. With kids being in close contact with other students in the classroom, and specific illnesses being more prominent this time of year, children are likely to catch a cold or two.

What are some of the common illnesses as schools get back in session?

Colds: Hence its name, the common cold tends to be the most common illness seen throughout the school year. It’s often caused by one of many possible viruses, which means antibiotics are not necessary. Symptoms are most often mild with cough, congestion and runny nose. Occasionally, children will get a sore throat and/or fever with the common cold.
Strep throat: Often causing a sore throat, along with fever, headache and stomachache, this illness is caused by a bacterial infection. It is easily spread from child to child, especially if sharing drinks and eating utensils. Antibiotics are recommended to prevent complications from the infection.
Flu: Unfortunately, as schools get into full swing, so does the flu. It typically causes high fevers and body aches, along with cough, congestion and runny nose. Kids generally need to stay home from school for a few days until the fever subsides and they get their energy back.
Stomach flu: What is often referred to as the stomach flu, gastroenteritis causes vomiting and diarrhea. This is most commonly caused by a virus affecting the stomach and intestines. It is very common and very contagious. Staying hydrated is key during the stomach flu.
Pink eye: Pink eye (or conjunctivitis) causes red eyes with green or yellow drainage. Eyes might be sealed shut in the morning from crusting of the discharge. If this happens, gently soften and wipe away the discharge with a warm, wet washcloth. Pink eye is highly contagious and can be caused by either a virus or bacteria. Sometimes antibiotic eye drops are necessary to clear the infection.

Welcome from your Crescent Harbor Library!

I am so excited for the beginning of this school year. I look forward to working with all of our kids to help them become critical thinkers, skillful researchers, ethical users of information, and most importantly ENTHUSIASTIC READERS!

Students will come to the library every week for a 45 minute period. During this time we will focus on learning how to search for and locate information in the library and online. We will find out about new and awesome books, enjoy storytime, and more. We will always have plenty of time to look for and check out new books.

Grades 1 and 2 can check out 2 books each week. Grades 3 and 4 can check out 3 books. We haven't begun checkout with Kinders yet but will after we spend some time teaching them how to take care of a library book and how to choose books they can enjoy. At the beginning of the year, the Kinder teachers may have the kids keep their books at school so that we can help them get in the habit of turning in books every week.

For our older kids, if they forget to return their books on their library day, they won't be able to check out a new one. However, if they bring them back the next day, we can give them time for a quick visit and checkout. It is really important that our kids develop the habit of returning books regularly on time.

On October 24th, during our Literacy Night Family Event, we will be hosting a BOOK FAIR in the library. We will have wonderful titles of new and exciting books, activity books and kits and accessories that kids from 1-99 will love. I will be sending home some fliers as we get closer to the event and will be asking for volunteer help through Parentsquare too.

For more information, please email me at seisenbarth@ohsd.net. My phone number is 360-279-5650. I will return calls as soon as possible.

Meet our new ART teacher - Mrs. Armstrong

As an artist, she works in woodblock printmaking and painting. Linnane has two children in OHPS and worked last year as a substitute teacher across the school district. She is excited to collaborate with classroom teachers on cross-curricular arts projects and allow students to explore their visual voices by creating art. The art classroom is always looking for volunteers!

Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Armstrong at larmstrong@ohsd.net.

Happy P.E weather

As the weather changes please remember your student has P.E. twice a week. Boots are great but hard to run in, Crocs, sandals and flip flops are not a great solution either. They lack support, limit mobility and cause blisters.

Check in with your student to see which days they have P.E. and plan some good shoes.

Be active
Thanks Mr. Nurvic
